The Parliament Becomes Plastic Straw-free

  • Submitted by: Kate Forbes, Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Friday, 02 February 2018
  • Motion reference: S5M-10272

That the Parliament congratulates the Scottish Parliamentary Corporate Body on making the decision to make the complex plastic straw-free; understands that items such as these can take up to 500 years to decompose, posing a danger to both the onshore and marine environment; notes that, in Scotland, an estimated three billion such straws are thrown away each year; applauds the corporate body's move to hand out biodegradable alternatives only on request; believes it is significant for the Parliament to lead the way on environmental initiatives, and urges local authorities, all public bodies, bars, restaurants, cafés and others to follow suit in the fight against what it sees as the scourge of plastic pollution.
