Support for Greenpeace UK Action Against Diesel Vehicles

  • Submitted by: Ross Greer, West Scotland, Scottish Green Party.
  • Date lodged: Friday, 22 September 2017
  • Motion reference: S5M-07858

That the Parliament acknowledges the direct action by Greenpeace UK to block the importation of diesel Volkswagen vehicles to the UK; recalls that, in 2015, Volkswagen was found to be using technology to manipulate emissions tests, which it believes resulted in over 11 million highly-polluting vehicles in operation across the world; understands that testing by the UK Department of Transport in 2016 found that all of the 37 top-selling diesel vehicles, including Volkswagen, surpassed EU emissions standards on nitrogen oxides when driven in real-world scenarios, with some emitting up to 12 times the maximum permitted; expresses concern regarding the impact of nitrogen oxides on human health, particularly on those with heart or lung conditions, which it believes is linked to tens of thousands of deaths per year in the UK, and commends Greenpeace UK for its action and efforts to protect human health and the environment.
