Lorraine Watson Becomes First Woman to Referee an SPFL Game

  • Submitted by: Alison Johnstone, Lothian, Scottish Green Party.
  • Date lodged: Monday, 18 September 2017
  • Motion reference: S5M-07739

That the Parliament welcomes the news that Lorraine Watson has become the first woman to referee an SPFL game, having taken charge of Edinburgh City’s 1-0 win over Berwick Rangers on 9 September 2017; notes that this follows previous involvement officiating at the Women’s under-19 European Championships, and as an assistant referee for a Rangers v Berwick Rangers match in 2013; understands that Lorraine hopes her progression into the senior set-up in Scottish football will inspire more young women to take up refereeing, saying that “the more it happens the more normal it will become”, and believes that as more girls and young women are able to grasp these opportunities, the benefits will be seen through greater representation for women in Scottish football, and also through improved attitudes towards women more generally, as gender stereotypes become increasingly untenable in modern Scottish society.
