Big Ben and the Blacklisters

  • Submitted by: Neil Findlay, Lothian, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 07 September 2017
  • Motion reference: S5M-07539

That the Parliament is concerned that the construction company, Sir Robert McAlpine, will reportedly be awarded a contract to refurbish Big Ben; believes that Sir Robert McAlpine has a history of involvement with the company, The Consulting Association, which reportedly organised the systematic blacklisting of thousands of workers, including those from the Lothian region; considers that this is another public contract awarded to companies involved in blacklisting, with other examples being the Dundee Waterfront project, Dumfries hospital and Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route, and believes that companies with a history of blacklisting should not be awarded public contracts until they have admitted what they have done, paid compensation and proved that they have self-cleansed.
