Fife Council Construction Charter

  • Submitted by: Alex Rowley, Mid Scotland and Fife, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Monday, 06 March 2017
  • Motion reference: S5M-04453

That the Parliament welcomes the new construction charter for Fife, which will see construction firms who want to get work from Fife Council having to agree to the charter, which promotes local employment, fair wages and workers' protection; congratulates the council on creating the charter with the help of the trade union, Unite; welcomes the move to eradicate bad industry practices such as in self-employment schemes across Fife; commends the council on encouraging the payment of fair wages, treating workers with dignity and respect and safeguarding health and safety standards; recognises that the charter was proposed by the Labour Councillor for Kirkcaldy Central, Judy Hamilton; supports the aim to improve opportunities in education and training, so that local people can help fill the construction skills gap and build a skilled workforce for the future, and hopes that other local authorities across Scotland will follow the example from Fife in introducing their own construction charters.
