President Trump Immigration Proposal

  • Submitted by: Christina McKelvie, Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 26 January 2017
  • Motion reference: S5M-03712

That the Parliament notes with concern the report from The Independent regarding proposals by President Trump to publish alleged crimes committed by immigrants on a weekly basis; considers that the use of the Declined Detainer Outcome Report in this way is an inflammatory policy designed to incite hatred; believes that, in addition to attempting to shame cities that choose to protect immigrants’ rights by refusing to deport them, President Trump has further threatened these cities with cuts to their federal funding; considers that this is an extremely alarming development and marks the prevalence of the far-right rhetoric symbolic throughout President Trump’s election campaign; believes that this proposed policy promotes the scapegoating of immigrant populations, encourages division and is detrimental to society; considers the far-right rhetoric espoused by President Trump to be divisive, and proposes that he urgently rethinks such policies.
