Celebrating Allan Ramsay (1684-1758) at Carlops

  • Submitted by: Christine Grahame, Midlothian South, Tweeddale and Lauderdale, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 20 October 2016
  • Motion reference: S5M-02046

That the Parliament congratulates the Allan Ramsay Hotel in Carlops, which is one of the Scotland’s oldest coaching inns, on it celebrating the life and work of the poet Allan Ramsay, after whom the hotel was named in 1792, with an exhibition and the unveiling of a plaque; understands with concern that Ramsay’s literary work is little known in Scotland’s schools though he undoubtedly influenced other writers, including Robert Burns; believes that schools could do more to publicise his work, and notes what it sees as the important role of rural pubs and hotels, such as the Allan Ramsay Hotel, in contributing to the cultural and economic health of the communities that they serve.
