  • Motion reference: S6M-19292

That the Parliament celebrates the 180th anniversary of St Patrick’s Roman Catholic (RC) Church in Coatbridge, which was established in 1845 to serve the growing Catholic community, particularly Irish immigrants who were fleeing the Great Famine and were drawn to the region’s thriving iron and coal industries; honours what it sees as the significant contribution of Canon Michael O’Keeffe, who oversaw the construction of the church in 1848 and championed the founding of numerous churches and schools throughout the Monklands area, thereby establishing St Patrick’s as a beacon of faith and community; recognises its historical importance as the Catholic centre of Lanarkshire for the Irish community and what it sees as its enduring role as a vibrant spiritual and cultural hub; acknowledges its ongoing contributions through hosting community events and the annual St Patrick’s Day festival; commends efforts to preserve its architectural and historical heritage, and calls on all to continue celebrating and safeguarding St Patrick’s as a treasured emblem of Scotland’s Christian heritage for generations to come.
