Shetland Cardiac Nurse Specialist Highly Commended at RCN Scotland Nurse of the Year Awards 2025

That the Parliament congratulates the Cardiac Nurse Specialist, Marie Hurson, on being Highly Commended in the Clinical Leadership Award category of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) Scotland Nurse of the Year Awards 2025; notes that this category is open to nurses and midwives working in a clinical leadership role and recognises exceptional leaders who make a difference to service delivery and quality of care; understands that Marie has dedicated her career to improving cardiovascular care in remote and rural settings, playing a pivotal role in developing and expanding cardiac nursing pathways, ensuring equitable access to high-quality care for Shetland residents, and establishing and delivering essential cardiac services such as cardiac rehabilitation and remote monitoring for heart failure patients; further understands that Marie’s leadership has significantly improved patient outcomes, reduced healthcare inequalities and established Shetland as a model for delivering specialist cardiac care in remote regions; notes that the RCN award described Marie’s work as “exemplifying clinical excellence, innovation and dedication to person-centred care”, and that she advances professional development through contributions to national research on cardiac care and supporting student placements and supervising trainees; commends Marie on her contributions to caring for people with cardiovascular conditions in Shetland; congratulates Marie on this prestigious recognition, and wishes her well for the future.
