Celebrating Buglife’s New Campaign, Don’t Neglect the Night

That the Parliament congratulates Buglife on the launch of its new campaign, "Don’t Neglect the Night", which intends to highlight the importance of the nocturnal environment; understands that around two thirds of all animal species are active at night, and depend on the unique conditions that come when the sun goes down; notes with concern that the nocturnal environment is facing increasingly disruptive issues, including light and noise pollution, habitat loss, and the impact of climate change, which is exacerbated at night; understands that light pollution levels have increased by 10% every year for the last decade, and believes that this active pollutant impacts both the world’s biodiversity and human life, including reducing plant pollinator interactions, disrupting the life cycles of marine species, and causing disruptive harms to birds, bats and European honey bees; recognises Buglife’s call for more to be done to protect the nocturnal environment, and calls on the Scottish Government to commit to actions that will help conserve and protect the nocturnal environment, including preserving and restoring natural dark areas, designating quiet areas to reduce noise pollution, and seeking legislative opportunities to strengthen protections.
