  • Submitted by: Humza Yousaf, Glasgow Pollok, Scottish National Party.

  • Motion reference: S6M-17543

That the Parliament recognises what it sees as the powerful work that the Food for All Group is undertaking in delivering workshops to local food banks to help them better understand the needs of asylum seekers and make it easier for them to access food; understands that, over the past three years, a group of experts, using their own personal lived experiences, co-produced materials that raise awareness and increase understanding of the barriers faced by people seeking asylum in relation to accessing food support; considers that such education not only includes making sure that there is a stock of foods which accommodate different cultures and regions, like halal meat, but also training to new members of communities in Scotland on how to cook with items that food banks are already giving out, as many may be unaccustomed to local food; believes that such education is vital in combating unintentional food waste and also leads to better settlement and integration of the newcomers; echoes the group's belief that everyone deserves dignified access to food and that through small steps that enhance a person’s dignity there can be a huge and positive impact on their lives, and commends the staff and volunteers on their fantastic work and wishes them all the very best.
