  • Submitted by: Paul O'Kane, West Scotland, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 29 April 2025
  • Motion reference: S6M-17324

That the Parliament understands that the village of Neilston will be celebrating the 200th Neilston Agricultural Show on 3 May 2025 at Holehouse, Neilston; notes that the Neilston Show is organised by the Neilston Agricultural Society, which received the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service in 2022; understands that it is not just an event for farmers locally and further afield, but also a much loved community event, which brings people of Neilston and of wider East Renfrewshire area together on the first Saturday of May every year; notes that the show includes the judging of cattle, sheep and horses, sheepdog trials, horse skill and workmanship exhibitions, competitions, including the famous Open Tug of War, the schools Tug of War and relay races, trade stands, craft stalls and children’s rides; further notes that the very first Neilston show in 1825 has been said to have started as a result of two competitive local farmers arranging a contest to decide who had the better prized bull; celebrates that, from its simple origin, the Neilston show has endured and grown into a significant cultural event over the last two centuries; congratulates the Agricultural Society for its ongoing efforts to put the show on each year; further congratulates the wider village of Neilston for supporting and preserving a piece of local heritage and culture, and wishes it the very best in having many more Neilston Shows in the years to come.
