TransiT Hub for Decarbonising Transport Receives £46 Million of Funding from EPSRC and Industry Partners

  • Submitted by: Paul Sweeney, Glasgow, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Monday, 19 August 2024
  • Motion reference: S6M-14128

That the Parliament celebrates the news that the TransiT Hub, co-led by the University of Glasgow and Heriot-Watt University, has received £46 million of funding to decarbonise UK transport using digital twinning technology; welcomes what it sees as the significant £20 million funding from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and £26 million from 67 industry partners; notes that eight universities are collaborating on this ambitious national research hub, which, it understands, is the UK's largest strategic investment into digital twinning for decarbonisation; considers that TransiT will be strategic to building UK capacity and capability in digital twinning of critical UK networks and services, which will be integral to future ambitions of delivering secure, resilient, timely and affordable sustainable critical UK networks; notes what it considers to be the significance of digital twinning in using real-world data to create digital replicas of the physical world, allowing engineers to better understand and de-risk how to implement low-cost pathways to net zero emissions; commends both Scottish universities on leading this UK-wide project, which will see 18 PhD students recruited to support the work, and wishes all those involved in the TransiT Hub the best as they work to create low-carbon solutions across rail, road, aviation and maritime transport networks.
