Safe Streets Bearsden

  • Submitted by: Ross Greer, West Scotland, Scottish Green Party.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 23 May 2024
  • Motion reference: S6M-13296

That the Parliament congratulates the newly formed Safe Streets Bearsden group on its work to draw attention to what it sees as poor provision for active travel in the Bearsden area; notes that the group has launched an online petition and held a march on 11 May 2024, which was attended by around 250 local residents, in favour of positive change to make Bearsden a cleaner, healthier and safer community; believes that this could be achieved through improved active travel and public transport provision, traffic calming measures, safe crossing spaces and Living Street initiatives; notes what it considers to be the poor road safety record in the Bearsden area, including the recent tragic death of a cyclist and a number of other collisions and near-misses; conveys its deepest sympathies to the family and loved ones of the woman killed on Manse Road in April 2024; shares the particular concerns for the safety of children attending Bearsden Early Years Centre, Primary and Academy, as well as St Nicholas Primary School, Maxholme Nursery and Glasgow High Junior School, all of which are located around the Drymen Road and Duntocher Road corridor; notes what it sees as the related issue of poor air quality around Bearsden Cross and on Milngavie Road, where the Bearsway project remains unfinished, and calls on East Dunbartonshire Council and all other stakeholders to take urgent and what it considers to be long overdue action to make Bearsden a truly safe and welcoming place to walk, wheel and cycle.
