Pay Care Workers the Missing Millions Campaign

  • Submitted by: Carol Mochan, South Scotland, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 16 April 2024
  • Motion reference: S6M-12820

That the Parliament notes what it sees as the disproportionate impact of cuts to fair work initiatives on the social care workforce; notes reports that £38 million, previously allocated to fair work in social care, has been cut from the budget, without consultation with trade unions, local authorities or employers; believes that the COVID-19 pandemic exposed a number of injustices in relation to the social care workforce that left the workforce, of largely women, increasingly underpaid and under-resourced; considers that care workers in general have suffered greatly from staffing shortages, zero hours contracts, health and safety issues and persistently poor pay, terms and conditions, and that this has led to an exodus of workers; calls on MSPs to support the Missing Millions campaign; further calls on the Scottish Government to help social care employers to meet fair work requirements by restoring fair work funding to finance improved pay and conditions, to commit to an immediate timeline to deliver sectoral bargaining, and to deliver immediately pay of £15 per hour for care workers.
