  • Date lodged: Monday, 18 March 2024
  • Motion reference: S6M-12530

That the Parliament celebrates Robert "Bobby" Hunter’s 13-year tenure as Lord Lieutenant of Shetland; understands that Mr Hunter, from Burra in Shetland, was appointed to represent the monarch as Lord Lieutenant for Shetland, in 2011, and will retire on 3 April 2024, which is his 75th birthday, as lord lieutenants are required to step down at this age; congratulates Mr Hunter on a successful time in the role, which has included the key duties of attending civic and public events and organising royal visits to Shetland, such as a visit from the former Prince of Wales, now His Majesty King Charles III, and two visits from Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal; notes that Mr Hunter has represented two monarchs in Shetland, as he was in post at the time of the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 2022, and the subsequent Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III; further notes that Mr Hunter attended both the Edinburgh funeral service for Her Majesty The Queen in St Giles’ Cathedral and His Majesty The King’s Coronation at Westminster Abbey in London, in his role as Lord Lieutenant of Shetland; praises Mr Hunter’s dedication to the role, which has seen him attend many events locally, including Remembrance Sunday services and over 100 citizenship ceremonies; celebrates Mr Hunter’s inclusion in His Majesty The King’s Birthday Honours List in 2023, in which he was appointed Commander, part of the Royal Victorian Order; considers that Mr Hunter’s inclusion in the Birthday Honours is testament to his successes during his time in the lieutenancy; understands that current Deputy Lord Lieutenant and former Police Area Commander for Shetland, Lindsay Tulloch, has been appointed as Mr Hunter’s successor; wishes Mr Tulloch well as he takes on the lieutenancy, and sends good wishes to Mr Hunter.
