More People Turning to Gambling

  • Submitted by: John Mason, Glasgow Shettleston, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Friday, 16 June 2023
  • Motion reference: S6M-09529

That the Parliament notes the annual LifeSearch report, Health, Wealth and Happiness; understands that the report has found that British citizens are increasingly turning to gambling as a “quick fix”, in light of wealth levels reportedly falling to historic lows; further understands that the report, compiled by the Centre for Economics and Business Research, states that the wealth index has fallen to the lowest level since 2013, with 52% of people feeling worse off than they did a year ago; notes the report's finding that almost one in three, or 29%, have had to use their savings over the last year to cover rising living costs, that one in 12, or 8%, have had to ask their families for money, and that approximately one in 10, or 11%, have been forced to take on more debt; understands that further figures show a stark increase in gambling compared with a year ago, with around a third of people saying that they had gambled at least once over the last year, spending on average £43 a month; further understands that almost 1.5 million people, or 3%, admitted that they had turned to gambling as a “quick fix” solution to their financial problems, upping either the frequency or the amount that they gamble, or both, in the last 12 months, spending an average of £268 more each month, with men twice as likely to be gambling more now than a year ago; welcomes the proposed updates to gambling legislation, but considers, however, that any measures must go further and support people struggling with gambling addiction and personal finance issues during the cost of living crisis.
