Commemorating Auchterarder’s Flight Lieutenant Alastair “Sandy” Gunn

  • Submitted by: Liz Smith, Mid Scotland and Fife, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 06 June 2023
  • Motion reference: S6M-09248

That the Parliament supports the strong desire of local residents in Auchterarder to commemorate Flight Lieutenant Alastair “Sandy” Gunn, a Spitfire pilot during the Second World War; understands that the recent plans for a garden near where he was born, including a bench in the shape of a Spitfire wing and information about his remarkable life, gained widespread support from local groups; notes that Flt Lt Gunn, following an esteemed record during missions for the RAF, was shot down over Norway in March 1942 where he was later sent to the infamous Stalag Luft III prisoner of war camp; recognises that Flt Lt Gunn was one of the 76 prisoners who escaped the camp in March 1944 on the daring night now famously known as the "Great Escape", and commemorates the life and tragic end of Flt Lt Gunn’s life, following his recapture and execution alongside 50 of the other escapees, by the Gestapo.
