Ferguslie Park Community Choir’s Participation in the Coronation Concert

  • Submitted by: Paul O'Kane, West Scotland, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 16 May 2023
  • Motion reference: S6M-08959

That the Parliament recognises that Ferguslie Park Community Choir performed at the Coronation Concert at Windsor Castle on 7 May 2023; understands that the choir group's participation resulted from the BBC coming across a story about the choir that featured in Paisley Daily Express in 2022; notes that the choir group, which meets every Monday at the Tannahill Centre, was founded in 2018, with the aim of promoting good mental health and physical wellbeing, as well as positive community interactions; further notes that the choir’s director, Jenny Cheung, runs a series of choirs in the Greater Glasgow area, which are open to all ages and come under the banner of the Voice Project Scotland; notes that the choir performed Emeli Sandé’s song, Brighter Days, and did so using British Sign Language in particular parts to make the performance more accessible; celebrates that the Ferguslie Park Community Choir made its local community proud as it performed to an audience of 20,000 people, and to an estimated two billion people watching at home, during the Coronation Concert; hopes that more people have been inspired, as a result of the performance, to join in and perform with community choirs across the country, and celebrates that this choir group, which is comprised of members from across Renfrewshire, had what it sees as the huge honour of representing Scotland at such a historic event.
