SSEN Distribution Resilience Planning Funding to North-east Local Authorities

  • Submitted by: Tess White, North East Scotland, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 09 May 2023
  • Motion reference: S6M-08820

That the Parliament welcomes SSEN Distribution’s announcement of £1.35 million of funding to the North East Scotland region’s three local authorities to help with resilience planning in local communities; considers that the awards of £1 million to Aberdeenshire Council, £200,000 to Moray Council, and £125,000 to Aberdeen City Council, reflect the level of impact felt across each region following the storms of winter 2021-22; understands that, to secure the funding, each local authority worked with SSEN to create a comprehensive community-led resilience programme, outlining the projects and initiatives that would most benefit from financial support, which include the provision of physical resilience equipment, such as generators for supported care facilities and batteries for those most at need, as well as capacity building and improving routes of communication during incidents; further understands that as part of its £1 million award, Aberdeenshire Council will purchase 100 battery generator packs for individuals to use in their homes, as well as 86 packs to be deployed across its Sheltered and Very Sheltered Housing complexes, allowing, it believes, the most vulnerable members of the community to remain in their own surroundings during a power outage, supporting their independent living; considers that this boost to community resilience complements SSEN’s existing Resilient Communities Fund, which has directly supported 680 community groups and not-for-profits with over £4.7 million of funding since its inception in 2015, and commends local community groups and councils for what it sees as the fantastic resilience planning work they have carried out to ensure communities are best prepared for adverse weather events.
