International Parental Child Abduction

  • Submitted by: Jamie Greene, West Scotland, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Friday, 24 February 2023
  • Motion reference: S6M-07872

That the Parliament welcomes Nathan Gilmour’s campaign to change the law on international parental child abduction, which, it understands, is based on his personal experiences on the issue; recognises what it sees as the tireless campaigning done by Nathan Gilmour and the Better Days for Men charity on this issue; acknowledges the trauma that the abduction of a child by a parent, without the other parent’s knowledge and consent, can pose; notes that the current law has reportedly been referred to as archaic, and that the 1987 Scottish Law Commission report, Child Abduction, stated that it is at odds with contemporary thinking, and calls on the Scottish Government to consult widely and carefully on what legal changes may be required to bring Scotland into line with other jurisdictions on this matter.
