Commending Emily Deas and Lauren Campbell and Highlighting Winter Water Safety

  • Submitted by: Fulton MacGregor, Coatbridge and Chryston, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 22 December 2022
  • Motion reference: S6M-07355

That the Parliament commends the bravery of two girls who it understands helped save the life of a local man who fell through the ice into the Monkland Canal in Coatbridge; understands that Emily Deas and Lauren Campbell, who are both 15 and from Coatbridge, upon hearing calls for help coming from the canal, responded in an incredibly brave and selfless manner; further understands that the girls called and then waved down emergency services, supported and calmed the man as they waited, and got his dog back to safety on the bank; understands that the man had gone onto the ice to save his dog, and that the girls are being considered for awards by Royal Life Saving Society UK, North Lanarkshire Council and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service; highlights the dangers of partially frozen water and encourages pet owners to keep their pets on a lead around frozen bodies of water and to follow official advice and call emergency services rather than putting their own life at risk; recognises that the recently revamped Monkland Canal path is a popular route and praises the work of the Friends of Monklands Canal group to make it so; understands, however, that, at the time, the area was largely empty and considers that it was incredibly lucky that Emily and Lauren found the gentleman when they did; urges everyone to be aware, especially given the recent tragedy in Solihull, that frozen waters can be extremely dangerous; encourages everyone to follow the Winter Water Safety guidelines and to keep dogs on their leads, to not go onto the ice under any circumstances, even to rescue pets, to keep back from the water's edge and to avoid walking near water in the dark, and sends its best wishes for the future to Emily, Lauren and the gentleman who they helped.
