Turkey/Sweden/Finland Agreement on NATO Membership

  • Submitted by: Ross Greer, West Scotland, Scottish Green Party.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 07 July 2022
  • Motion reference: S6M-05324

That the Parliament condemns reports of Turkey's opportunistic demands of Sweden and Finland in exchange for an agreement not to block their applications for NATO membership at the 2022 alliance summit in Madrid and the subsequent Trilateral Memorandum signed by each nation; understands that the agreement shows an acceptance of what it sees as Turkey's continued campaign of ethnic cleansing and persecution of the Kurdish people both inside of Turkey's border and globally, including an agreement between the nations to share military intelligence despite serious concerns about the actions of Turkey's intelligence services as expressed by multiple human rights organisations, the lifting of a Swedish/Finnish arms embargo against Turkey, and the request for the extradition of numerous Kurdish political activists and exiles who have sought safety in both nations, and notes with concern what it sees as NATO's disregard for human rights, democracy, peace and freedom as exemplified by Turkey's continued membership of the alliance and the lack of action taken against them despite decades of what it believes to be brutal and oppressive actions against the Kurdish people.
