Victory for the Dovesdale Action Group

  • Submitted by: Monica Lennon, Central Scotland, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 29 March 2022
  • Motion reference: S6M-03781

That the Parliament welcomes the announcement by Viridor that the company no longer intends to build the Overwood Energy Recovery Facility at the Dovesdale Complex near Stonehouse; commends the Dovesdale Action Group for what it sees as its tireless campaign over more than a decade to prevent incinerators being developed; believes that this exemplary people-powered campaigning has mobilised cross-party working and has helped to safeguard the environment and protect people from harmful emissions; congratulates Dovesdale Action Group for its role in securing the Scottish Government’s current ongoing review into the role of incineration in Scotland’s waste hierarchy and looks forward to the outcome of the review and the publication of the Circular Economy Bill; understands that proposals and planning applications for incinerator developments are active in other parts of Scotland, and considers that the campaign led by John Young and the Dovesdale Action Group is giving hope and inspiration to people across the UK and beyond that the waste industry can be reshaped in harmony with the environment.
