Supporting #StopEcocideEverywhere International Week of Action

  • Submitted by: Monica Lennon, Central Scotland, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Friday, 18 March 2022
  • Motion reference: S6M-03657

That the Parliament acknowledges #StopEcocideEverywhere, from 20 to 25 March 2022, as the international week of action for the recognition of ecocide; understands that ecocide refers to unlawful or wanton acts committed with knowledge that there is a substantial likelihood of severe and widespread or long-term damage to the environment being caused by those acts; further understands that, following COP26 in 2021, there are growing calls around the world for ecocide to be recognised as an international crime under the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, including in France, Belgium and Mexico; notes that, on 28 February 2022, in a speech to the Fifth Session of the UN Environment Assembly, UNEA President, the Norwegian Minister of Climate and Environment, Espen Barth Eide, referred to remarks made by Olof Palme, in a 1972 address to the UN Conference on the Human Environment, about the limits to what the environment can tolerate and about the perils of ecocide; believes that making ecocide a crime could help to protect the earth from the most serious acts of intentional pollution and damage to nature; commends Stop Ecocide International for leading what it sees as this important global campaign, and welcomes action in Scotland to explore ecocide legislation and to contribute to what it sees as the global movement for ecocide law, in the fight against the climate and ecological emergencies.
