To ask the Scottish Government what progress it is making toward delivering each of the action points in Play Strategy for Scotland: Our Action Plan.

Progress is being made and a number of sector led, short-life Action Groups have been established to take forward priority activities. Progress is being monitored by the Play Strategy Implementation Group which is a multi-agency stakeholder group drawing its membership from health, the third sector, the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities and education.

We have recently awarded funding of £100k to a number of partners to help support implementation of the Action Plan.

To ask the Scottish Government what measures each NHS board has put in place to reduce the incidence of haemorrhagic stroke.

Primary prevention of stroke including haemorrhagic stroke can best be achieved through a healthy lifestyle: a healthy diet, regular exercise, drinking sensibly and not smoking.

The Scottish Government has developed a range of policies aimed at supporting people to live healthier lives, recognising that early intervention and better lifestyle choices can have very positive effects on health.

Advice on healthy lifestyle choices should be embedded into every aspect of healthcare provision as part of routine contact with patients.

All boards are expected to follow the guidance set out in the Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN) guideline 108: Management of patients with stroke or TIA: assessment, investigation, immediate management and secondary care and prevention. The guideline provides evidence based best practice recommendations for the management and care of people with stroke, including haemorrhagic stroke.

The Scottish Stroke Care Standards (updated in January 2013) followed the publication of the SIGN guideline, and note the importance of starting secondary prevention early in avoiding further strokes. Current performance against the standards will be published in the 2014 Scottish Stroke Care Audit National Report in July 2014, which will be available at: www.strokeaudit.scot.nhs.uk.

To ask the Scottish Government whether it will provide a breakdown of the prevalence of haemorrhagic stroke by NHS board.

Information on the prevalence of haemorrhagic stroke is not currently available centrally.

Information on the estimated prevalence of all types of stroke and transient ischaemic attack is published on Information Services Division’s website under the general practice topic area;

To ask the Scottish Government whether it will provide a breakdown of the usage of novel oral anticoagulants by NHS board.

The percentage of the population dispensed a novel oral anticoagulant for the financial year 2012-13 is shown in table 1. This table includes community dispensing only.

To ask the Scottish Government what services each NHS board has put in place to support the use of novel oral anticoagulants.

The information on the services each board has put in place is not held centrally. The service configurations chosen across acute and primary provision are entirely operational matters for the territorial health board and Scottish Ministers do not direct or intervene in these local arrangements. These local guidelines will reflect Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN) Guideline 129 Antithrombotics: indications and management published in June 2013.
