To ask the Scottish Executive what the ratio of offenders to criminal justice social workers has been in each of the last five years, broken down by local authority area.
The available information isgiven in the following table. The ratios represent the number of individual convictedoffenders to the number of qualified criminal justice social workers.
The ratios are not an indicationof the workload of criminal justice social workers. Individual offenders may receiveany type of court disposal including custody, community sentences and monetary penalties,and may receive more than one conviction in a given year. Criminal justice socialworkers provide services in relation to the supervision of community sentences andwider services including Throughcare and Voluntary Assistance for released and supervisedprisoners, diversion from prosecution and the preparation of reports for court (e.g.Social Enquiry Reports).

These offendersmay have received more than one conviction within each financial year and, wherethey received a community sentence, may not always be supervised in the area inwhich they are convicted.
2. Whilst local authority andcourt areas are not co-terminous, the segregation in this answer represents thebest available approximation to local authority data.
