Notes:
1. The latest available information on discharges from psychiatric hospitals is 2001. More up to date information is not available due to data submission problems in several NHS board areas. It is hoped that this will be resolved by the end of this year.
2. This information was extracted from the SMR01 and SMR04 linked data set maintained by ISD Scotland. SMR01 records (Scottish Morbidity Records 1) record all in-patient and day case discharges from non-obstetric and non-psychiatric specialties in NHS Hospitals in Scotland. SMR04 records (Scottish Morbidity Records 4) record all in-patient and day case discharges from mental illness hospitals and psychiatric units. Probability matching methods have been used to link together individual hospital records for each patient, thereby creating “linked” patient histories.
3. Alcohol-related conditions are defined by using the World Health Organisation's International Classification of Diseases 9th and 10th Revisions (ICD9 & ICD10). ICD9 V11, 291, 303, 3050, 3575, 4255, 5353, 3050, 5710, 5711, 5712, 5713, 6555, 7607, 7903, ,9773, 9800, E8600, E8609 and E9473. ICD10 E52, F10, K70, X45, X65, Y15, Y90, Y91, G312, G621, G721, I426, K292, K860, O354, P043, Q860, R780, T506, T510, T519, Y573, Z133, Z502, Z637, Z714, Z721, Z811 and Z864. Up to six diagnoses (one principal, five secondary) are recorded on the SMR01 and SMR04 returns. All six diagnostic positions were used for the analysis.
4. Incidence of alcohol-related conditions is calculated by counting the number of first admissions to hospital each year for alcohol-related conditions. Records for a patient are checked back to 1981 to confirm if they had a previous admission to hospital for alcohol-related conditions.
