To ask the Scottish Executive what action it has taken with regard to the implications for the Scottish economy of the dispute between the USA and the European Union over the issue of European banana imports.
Answer
The regulation of international trade is a reserved matter. However, the Scottish Executive is working closely with Scottish Trade International, the Scotland Office, and the Department of Trade and Industry to try to avert the imposition of tariffs by the US that would impact adversely on companies in Scotland.

To ask the Scottish Executive whether it will make allowances for "safety tonnage" such as additional shelterdecks when tonnage on new and modernised fishing vessels is recorded.
Answer
Council Decision 97/413/EC allows member states to seek an increase in their MAGP targets to take account of safety and similar improvements.
We are prepared to consider any requests from the fishing industry to take account of this provision but the approval of the European Commission will also be required.

To ask the Scottish Executive what support it has given to health boards and health trusts regarding the treatment of osteoporosis.
Answer
Health boards and NHS Trusts devise strategies for the care of patients with a wide variety of conditions, including osteoporosis. They are best suited to determine the services which are required to meet the needs of their local population, within available resources. Health boards have received allocations for the current year for their hospital and community health services and prescribed drugs totalling £4.1 billion.
Guidance to help health boards and NHS Trusts to devise strategies for osteoporosis was issued by the Health Department in 1997 in the form of a Scottish Needs Assessment Programme report. This gave the conclusions of a group of experts drawn from within the NHS on the current situation in Scotland, a review of recent research, and options for the prevention, detection and management of osteoporosis.

The Scottish Executive is currently considering alternative proposals for the A90 Hatton Bends Improvement scheme and has provisionally included £0.25 million in financial year 2002-03 to cover the anticipated construction costs. However, the planned expenditure is subject to change depending on the outcome of the consideration of the alternative scheme proposals.
