To ask the Scottish Executive what plans it has to commission research into the link between housing conditions and the number of winter deaths.
Answer
Excess winter deaths have many and complex causes. But insofar as they may be related to cold and damp houses they will be tackled by the Central Heating Programme. We have already conducted a study of the feasibility of research on the health effects of the Central Heating Programme and are now commissioning a major study of the associations between the two.
