To ask the Scottish Executive how many independent patient treatment requests for medicines licensed for use in the UK in the last five years have been (a) made to NHS boards and (b) approved.
Answer
Information on the number of Individual patient treatment requests made to NHS boards and approved in the last five years is not held centrally.
NHS boards and clinicians are expected to take full account of advice from the Scottish Medicines Consortium and Healthcare Improvement Scotland in the planning and provision of NHS services. Where this advice clarifies that a new medicine is not accepted for use within NHSScotland, NHS boards are not expected to make it routinely available. However, NHS boards have arrangements in place for the clinical consideration of “not recommended” medicines for individual patients in certain circumstances (Individual Patient Treatment Requests).

To ask the Scottish Executive what action it will take to ensure that the governing body for swimming in Scotland is fully representative and consults all stakeholders with an interest in matters related to swimming policy development.
Answer
The Sport Governing body of Scottish Swimming are the guardians and custodians of their sport, an essential element of Scottish sport and one that this government recognises and values.
Funding for Scottish swimming is routed via sportscotland however there is no automatic entitlement to investment and Scottish swimming must demonstrate they are able to deliver a plan for their sport which contributes to sportscotland’s Corporate Plan priorities and the National Strategy for Sport.
The monitoring and review of sport governing bodies is a matter for sportscotland and I have asked the Chief Executive Stewart Harris to write to you detailing their governance of Scottish Swimming.

To ask the Scottish Executive how many cleaning staff each NHS board has employed in each year since 2007.
Answer
The information requested is not held centrally. However, information regarding the number of domestic staff employed by NHS boards is collected. The number of domestic staff employed by NHS Scotland (head count) is shown in the following table by NHS board for years 2007 to 2010.
Please note that data is not directly comparable across NHS boards and across years. The data was collected at different times of year and may be influenced by a number of factors, including boards’ differing use of contract cleaners and overtime working and in-year fluctuations.
