To ask the Scottish Executive how many NHS appointments have been missed in each year since 2009 and at what cost.

Information on the number of patients who did not attend (DNA) a first outpatient appointment at a consultant-led clinic in the calendar years 2009 and 2010 is provided in the table below. Data for 2011 are not yet available.

Information is not available on the cost of a non-attendance at an outpatient clinic.

Prior to the introduction of the New Ways of Defining and Measuring Waiting Times, DNA information was only available for first outpatient appointments from Scottish Morbidity Records. DNA information is now published from the National Waiting Times dataset for both first outpatient appointments and for inpatient and day case treatment.

Latest published information from New Ways shows that for the quarter ending 31 December 2011, there were 35,698 missed first outpatient appointments at a consultant-led clinic a DNA rate of 9.5%. For the same, there were 2,421 missed appointments for inpatient and day case treatment, a DNA rate 2.2%.

To ask the Scottish Executive how much money from the Adult Social Care Change Fund has been used to support unpaid carers each year.

Guidance to partnerships for 2011-12, the first year of the Reshaping Care for Older People Change Fund, made clear that they should invest an appropriate portion of their change fund allocation in provision that specifically supports carers. A six monthly analysis of partnership returns suggested that cumulatively, partnerships allocated £3.9 million of the change fund in direct support of carers.

From 2012-13 onwards, the Scottish Government has committed to ensure that at least 20% of the Change Fund is used to support carers to continue to care. In the period 2012-15, this means that at least £46 million should be dedicated to carer support.

To ask the Scottish Executive how many suicides there have been among farmers in each year since 1999.

The National Records of Scotland (NRS) publishes statistics of the numbers of probable suicides. These are deaths which have been classified as the result of intentional self-harm or of events of undetermined intent, because it is thought that most of the latter are likely to be suicides. Further information about statistics of probable suicides is available at: http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/statistics/theme/vital-events/deaths/suicides/index.html.

For the figures for 1999 to 2009, I refer the member to the question S3W-35951, answered on 14 September 2010. All answers to written Parliamentary Questions are available on the Parliament’s website, the search facility for which can be found at http://www.scottish.parliament.uk/parliamentarybusiness/28877.aspx.

The answer to question S3W-35951 gave the numbers of probable suicides for which the deceased’s occupation was simply described on the death certificate as “farmer”. The following table provides figures on exactly the same basis for 2010. The corresponding statistics for 2011 will not be available until after NRS has published the total number of probable suicides for that year, which is scheduled for August.

1. These figures do not include suicides of people whose occupations were described in other ways - for example, they did not include suicides of fish farmers, farm labourers, farm workers, gamekeepers, shepherds, tractor drivers or crofters.
