To ask the Scottish Executive what measures are in hand to promote the key attributes of co-operative business development.
Answer
We recognise the value that the social economy can play in regenerating communities and tackling social exclusion. In our efforts to strengthen the social economy we are encouraging Scottish Enterprise and Highlands & Islands Enterprise to offer support and advice to social and community based enterprises as well as to mainstream business. My Ministerial colleague, Henry McLeish will ask Scottish Enterprise and Highlands & Islands Enterprise to contact Ms Eadie with a view to discussing the issue of co-operatives in the context of business development.

To ask the Scottish Executive what work has been undertaken to collate information on the number of employee owned businesses in Scotland.
Answer
The Scottish Executive currently has no specific plans to collate information on the number of employee owned businesses in Scotland. However, data were published in a Scottish Office Statistics Bulletin in November 1998 on the number of enterprises operating in Scotland in 1997 broken down by industry and employee sizeband. These data give a clear estimate of the number of enterprises run by self-employed people with no employees and those run by partnerships who don't have any employees (199,555 in total). This data will be updated for 1998 at the end of this year by the Scottish Executive.

To ask the Scottish Executive whether universities in Scotland have developed links with universities in other parts of the world in order to share knowledge and experience on Co-operative Development
Answer
Universities in Scotland have a wide variety of links with universities in other parts of the world. We are not aware of formal university links for this particular purpose, but understand that some university staff do have specific overseas links in the area of business generation, which may include co-operative development.
