Preliminary analyses of existing data held by the Scottish Centre for Infection and Environmental Health (SCIEH) suggest that around 35,000 persons alive in Scotland have been infected with hepatitis C as at March 2000 and that the great majority of these will be asymptomatic carriers of the virus.
