Purple Day, 26 March 2014

  • Submitted by: Gil Paterson, Clydebank and Milngavie, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 12 March 2014
  • Motion reference: S4M-09314

That the Parliament acknowledges that 26 March 2014 is Purple Day, which aims to increase public awareness of epilepsy; understands that many members and parliamentary staff will show their support by wearing something purple on the day; believes that 54,000 people in Scotland have this serious neurological condition, which affects over 50 million people worldwide, and applauds the efforts of everyone aiming to highlight epilepsy; appreciates the work of the support groups, education and health professionals and organisations, including the Epilepsy Consortium Scotland, that draw attention to the need for better public education about epilepsy; believes that the school pupils, workplaces and communities across the country taking part in Purple Day fun activities will develop a greater understanding of it; congratulates the campaigners who use the media to make public their experiences of epilepsy; congratulates Brian Rocks, who lives in the Clydebank and Milngavie constituency, who, it understands, is aiming to make football clubs more "seizure aware", and welcomes Purple Day as it invites everyone to champion a positive social attitude to epilepsy.
