24/7 Samaritans Awareness Day 2021, #WeListen

  • Submitted by: Alexander Stewart, Mid Scotland and Fife, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 08 July 2021
  • Motion reference: S6M-00621

That the Parliament welcomes the news that 24 July will be 24/7 Samaritans Awareness Day 2021, Talk To Us; acknowledges that every year on this day, Samaritans' branches in the UK and Ireland, and on social media via the hashtag #WeListen, hold events to raise awareness that the charity is there at any time of the day or night to listen to anyone who is struggling to cope; understands that it also puts up thousands of posters and adverts in train stations to raise awareness of its 24-hour listening service, which offers emotional support to anyone who needs someone; notes that, through this campaign, it wants people to know that, whatever they are facing, a Samaritan will face it with them, with no judgement and no pressure; understands that, since it was launched in February 2015, the posters have been seen by tens of millions of people and there has been a subsequent reported fall in the number of people dying by suicide on the railways, and commends Samaritans on its truly sterling work.
