Flapper Skate Egg-laying Site in Loch Melfort

  • Submitted by: Pauline McNeill, Glasgow, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 06 July 2021
  • Motion reference: S6M-00604

That the Parliament welcomes the locating of the flapper skate egg-laying site in Loch Melfort; notes the importance of this as only the second such area for this critically-endangered species; recognises the ability of the seabed in places such as Loch Melfort, which are in Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), to recover and provide benefits to the wider marine ecosystem; acknowledges that many MPAs and other sensitive seabed areas are yet to be protected in such a way despite scientific advice, and notes the calls for better protection of Scotland's inshore marine ecosystem.
