West Lothian School Pupil Wins Award for Fundraising to Provide Reusable Water Bottles

  • Submitted by: Sue Webber, Lothian, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Friday, 12 November 2021
  • Motion reference: S6M-01984

That the Parliament congratulates seven-year-old Callum Isted, a pupil at Dedridge Primary School in Livingston, on his successful ongoing campaign to reduce single-use plastic, especially water bottles in schools; understands that Callum initially launched a campaign to reduce the use of single-use plastic water bottles in school packed lunches and, by working with his school and local authority, has ensured that disposable plastic water bottles provided with packed lunches are now optional, reducing the number of single-use plastic bottles issued; acknowledges that Callum made it his mission to provide every pupil at his school with a reusable bottle, and managed to fundraise the £1,500 to provide 185 Klean Kanteen bottles for the pupils in his school by walking 134 miles, coast to coast, along the John Muir Way, from Helensburgh to Dunbar, as well as organising a raffle and pyjama day at school; understands that, as a result of his actions, Callum has been awarded a Learning for Sustainability Award, and has been invited to the Green Zone at COP26; wishes him continued success in his campaign to reduce the use of plastic in schools, and congratulates him on submitting his petition on this campaign to the Scottish Parliament, where it was recently discussed at a meeting of the Citizen Participation and Public Petitions Committee.
