The Bowline Wins the Community Category at the Scottish Civil Engineering Awards

  • Submitted by: Jackie Baillie, Dumbarton, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 05 October 2021
  • Motion reference: S6M-01503

That the Parliament congratulates Mackenzie Construction on winning the Community Award for the Bowline project at the Scottish Civil Engineering Awards 2020-21; understands that it was Scottish Canals’ lead contractor on the project at Bowling Harbour, which saw the transformation of a disused railway viaduct into a linear park for walking, cycling and wheeling; believes the Bowline has been hailed as Scotland’s answer to New York City’s High Line; notes that it connects the canal towpath to the wider National Cycle Network, providing uninterrupted off-road access between Glasgow and Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park; believes that the awards, which are jointly managed by the Civil Engineering Contractors Association Scotland and the Institution of Civil Engineers Scotland, are widely recognised as the highest honours for civil engineering excellence in Scotland; notes that the judging panel commended Mackenzie Construction for supporting youth groups, encouraging the involvement of schools in educational programmes and donating time and expertise to refurbish Bowling Village Hall; recognises that Scottish Canals delivered a 14-week Canal College programme in conjunction with the company at Bowling Harbour, providing skills and employability training for people from the area who were experiencing barriers to employment, with one of the graduates going on to work for the contractor throughout the project; believes that the project, and the wider Bowling Harbour redevelopment, has had a positive social impact on communities in West Dunbartonshire, and applauds Mackenzie Construction, Scottish Canals and their partners for what it sees as their strong engagement with the community.
