Welcoming the IPCC's Sixth Assessment Report

  • Submitted by: Mark Ruskell, Mid Scotland and Fife, Scottish Green Party.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 11 August 2021
  • Motion reference: S6M-00844

That the Parliament welcomes the latest report by the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which has been described by the UN Secretary-General as "code red for humanity"; recognises the calls for rapid and sustained reductions in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in order to limit global temperature increases to 1.5°C and well below 2°C; understands that, if governments continue without significant GHG emissions reductions, global temperatures would surpass the 2°C limit and lead to irreversible climatic and environmental disasters, and recognises COP26 as a critical opportunity to secure stronger commitments from all parties to reduce GHG emissions and achieve net-zero globally by 2050.
