Cambodia Remembrance

  • Submitted by: John Mason, Glasgow Shettleston, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Friday, 21 May 2021
  • Motion reference: S6M-00068

That the Parliament notes that 20 May is a National Day of Remembrance to commemorate victims of genocide in Cambodia; recognises that the Khmer Rouge seized power in April 1975 following years of guerrilla warfare, imposing a ruthless programme to reconstruct Cambodia on the model of Mao’s China; acknowledges that its aim was to remove social classes and Western influence from the country; regrets that it is estimated that over two million people (a quarter of the population) were murdered during this period through execution, disease, exhaustion and starvation; expresses its good wishes to the people of Cambodia, and hopes that all countries will learn from such past experiences and work to create a better and safer future for all citizens.
