European Union Citizens are Welcome in Scotland

  • Submitted by: Kenneth Gibson, Cunninghame North, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Monday, 17 May 2021
  • Motion reference: S6M-00021

That the Parliament understands that some EU citizens with job interviews have been sent to immigration removal centres and held in airport detention rooms across the UK, despite Home Office rules explicitly allowing non-visa holders to attend job interviews; is aware of reports that among the people detained was a French citizen held at Edinburgh Airport for 48 hours; is concerned by the impact of the UK Government’s "hostile environment" policy on the, mostly young, European citizens, who are believed to be being denied entry and detained; considers that this is an unacceptable situation; recognises that the Home Office updated its guidance to immigration officers to “clarify” that overseas nationals who had been refused entry should now be allowed bail while awaiting removal “where appropriate;” acknowledges that European citizens have greatly enriched Scotland culturally and economically over recent decades, and reiterates its message that they remain welcome in Scotland.
