  • Submitted by: Kenneth Gibson, Cunninghame North, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Friday, 12 March 2021
  • Motion reference: S5M-24361

That the Parliament notes that 6 March 2021 was the centennial of Dr James Laidlaw Maxwell Senior’s passing; understands that he was a Scottish missionary born in 1836 who introduced modern hospital services and medicine to Taiwan in 1865 and began his medical and evangelistic works, which continued until his retirement; recognises Dr Maxwell’s contribution in pioneering a modern public health system, establishing Sin-Lao Hospital, the first western modelled hospital in Taiwan, and providing spiritual support to Taiwanese; welcomes that the Chunghwa Post Co in Taiwan will issue commemorative stamps of the portrait of Dr Maxwell; notes that the Presbyterian Church, both in Taiwan and in the UK, will host a memorial concert and memorial service to honour the contributions that he made to society; believes that Scots abroad have made a significant and positive contribution to the world, and pledges to respect Dr Maxwell’s memory by carrying on his work and remembering his contributions.
