Earth Day 2024

  • Submitted by: Foysol Choudhury, Lothian, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 23 April 2024
  • Motion reference: S6M-12929

That the Parliament recognises the 54th annual Earth Day on 22 April 2024; understands that Earth Day is an international event to demonstrate support for protecting the natural environment, and that it is marked by more than one billion people in 193 countries; acknowledges that the theme of Earth Day 2024 is “Planet vs. Plastics”, through which the health risks and environmental impacts of the widespread use of plastics are made clear; notes the EarthDay.org report on the concerning prevalence of microplastics in the human body, which are linked to a wide range of health issues, including cancer and infertility; commends the organisers of Earth Day for mobilising the public in protecting the environment, such as in Leith, where a community litter pick was held to mark Earth Day; notes what it sees as the importance of international cooperation in protecting the environment and responding to the challenges posed by the climate crisis, and hopes for a sustainable future.
