Dumfries Veterans Nominated for Top Awards

  • Submitted by: Emma Harper, South Scotland, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 02 April 2024
  • Motion reference: S6M-12708

That the Parliament congratulates Dumfries veterans, Mark Harper and Maurice Kennedy ("Wee Mo”), both of whom are involved with the Dumfries Veterans Garden, on being placed on the shortlist for Volunteer of the Year, sponsored by Serica Energy, at the 2024 Scottish Veterans Awards; understands that the Veterans Garden, based at the Crichton Estate in Dumfries, won a bronze award in the Health and Wellbeing category in 2023, and that it has been shortlisted for the same award in 2024, as well as Veterans Group of the Year; further understands that two other Dumfries and Galloway finalists are up for awards, namely Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Armed Forces Champion, Cllr Archie Dryburgh MBE, for both Role Model of the Year and Lifetime Achievement, and Dumfries and Galloway Council in the Employer of the Year category, for recruiting and supporting veterans and Armed Forces personnel; acknowledges what it sees as the difficult choices being faced by the independent judging panel in choosing from hundreds of nominees, and wishes the finalists and winners alike a wonderful evening.
