  • Submitted by: Foysol Choudhury, Lothian, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 27 March 2024
  • Motion reference: S6M-12657

That the Parliament notes that the 53rd anniversary of the independence, and the National Day, of the People's Republic of Bangladesh falls on 26 March 2024; acknowledges that this day marks the declaration of Bangladesh's independence from Pakistan in 1971; remembers those who made sacrifices and suffered during Bangladesh's war of independence; commemorates Bangladesh's founding father, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman; celebrates what it considers to be the economic and cultural ties between Bangladesh and Scotland; notes the contributions of the Bangladeshi community in Scotland in all walks of life, including the arts, culture and business; recognises what it sees as the importance of Scotland and Bangladesh working together on issues of shared interest, such as climate change, education, culture, sustainable development and the green transition, which were highlighted during the visit of the Scottish Parliament's Cross-Party Group on Bangladesh to Bangladesh in November 2023, and wishes the people of Bangladesh and all in the Bangladeshi diaspora in Scotland and around the world a happy and prosperous Independence Day.
