Commending the Work of the Western Isles Rape Crisis Centre

  • Submitted by: Alasdair Allan, Na h-Eileanan an Iar, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 20 March 2024
  • Motion reference: S6M-12583

That the Parliament praises the work carried out by staff and volunteers at Western Isles Rape Crisis Centre (WIRCC); understands that the charity organisation, which is based in Stornoway and is a part of the wider Rape Crisis Scotland network, offers advice and support to anyone over the age of 13 who has experienced sexual violence in the Western Isles; believes that the support groups available to women throughout each month have provided a safe space for them, whilst encouraging women to explore their creativity and take part in health and wellbeing classes; notes that the group provides an advocacy service, allowing for comfort and guidance to be made available to anybody seeking their help, from the moment that they consider reporting a crime to the police right up to the conclusion of the legal process; recognises one of the group’s main aims of increasing knowledge within the community in order to prevent sexual violence from occurring, and thanks it for what it sees as its continued contribution to helping survivors in the local area.
