DART Secures Another Award for The Corner

  • Submitted by: Brian Whittle, South Scotland, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Friday, 15 March 2024
  • Motion reference: S6M-12520

That the Parliament congratulates the Darvel Area Regeneration Team (DART) on its recent recognition in the Scottish Civic Trust’s My Place Awards; understands that the awards seek to celebrate community-led built environment projects that have transformed their locality, as well as the hard work of the people behind those projects; further understands that The Corner, for which the award was given, began with a community asset transfer of the derelict Darvel Industrial Cooperative Society in 2019, and from there faced funding challenges due to COVID-19, and even issues with contractors, as well as a burst water main, before realisation of the project in June 2023; considers the £500,000 project to be a success due to what it sees as its ability to embrace the ideals of community inclusivity, wellbeing, local commerce and civic pride by considering design features, including full wheelchair accessibility, raised planters with seating edges, power distribution throughout, low-energy LED lighting, recycling bins and an active travel hub with long-wearing and low maintenance materials sourced locally where possible; notes that, in its first six months of operation, The Corner has hosted 12 formal events, including the inaugural Darvelo23, involving over 200 local vendors and over 4,000 visitors, and that it continues to offer informal activities for Brownies, Scouts, walkers, cyclists, the local church, and other community organisations; commends DART and all of those included in the project for their hard work, and wishes them well in all of their future endeavours, including the planned upgrades to The Corner, such as water collection and a sedum roof to its store.
