  • Date lodged: Monday, 28 June 2021
  • Motion reference: S6M-00541

That the Parliament condemns the vandalism with fascist and right wing symbols and slogans of the Duchess Park, Motherwell, memorial to those volunteers from the area who joined the International Brigade and fought against Franco and the Fascist regime in Spain between 1936 and 1939; notes that the memorial was unveiled in 2013 following the fundraising efforts of the No Pasaran Memorial Committee, North Lanarkshire, on the 77th anniversary of the Spanish Civil War, and is inscribed with the words of Dolores Iburruri; commends local man, Steven McGowan, and his son, also Steven, who undertook to clean the memorial, showing leadership against this despicable act, and notes the widespread upset that the act caused locally and on social media.
