University of Edinburgh's Attempt to Save Lyell's Notebooks

  • Submitted by: Alexander Burnett, Aberdeenshire West, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 16 July 2019
  • Motion reference: S5M-18246

That the Parliament commends and supports the efforts of the University of Edinburgh in raising £332,000 of the £966,000 needed to save the 294 notebooks of the Scottish geologist, Sir Charles Lyell, from being auctioned abroad; recognises that Sir Charles' writings and many public lectures established him as a world renowned scientist, both at home and abroad, most notably his Principles of Geology, in resonating with the ambition and rigor of Newton's, Principia; notes that this, not only promoted particular geological theories, but also helped firmly establish the integrity and reliability of the developing earth sciences; acknowledges that the university has been granted until 15 October 2019 to meet the target, and encourages the public to pledge their support and donate if possible.
